As a Bakery Assistant, you’ll support the baking team in daily production by preparing ingredients, assisting with dough handling, and maintaining bakery displays. You’ll help ensure the section is clean, stocked, and inviting throughout the day. What you will do
Duties & responsibilities
Customer Service
- Greet customers warmly and offer assistance with bakery purchases.
- Provide information about bakery items, including ingredients, allergens, and preparation methods.
- Upsell and promote special items, seasonal treats, or promotions to enhance sales.
- Handle customer orders, including custom orders and special requests, with accuracy and attention to detail.
Product Presentation & Stock Management
- Assist in receiving, checking, and organising bakery ingredient deliveries.
- Ensure the display cases are well-stocked, organised, and visually appealing throughout the day.
- Manage inventory levels by tracking stock usage, reporting low stock levels, and assisting with reordering as needed.
- Rotate bakery items to maintain freshness and remove past sell-by date or damaged goods.
- Maintain proper labelling on products, including price tags, ingredient lists, and promotional signage.
Preparation and Production
- Assist in preparing bakery items, including doughs, batters, fillings, decorations and final packaging under the direction of the head baker or controller.
- Operate bakery equipment such as mixers, ovens, dough sheeters, and slicers safely and efficiently.
- Follow recipes, portion sizes, and product specifications accurately to ensure consistent quality.
- Monitor baking times and temperatures to ensure products are prepared to the highest standards.
Cleanliness and Safety
- Maintain a clean and sanitary work environment, including washing equipment, tools, and surfaces regularly.
- Follow food safety protocols and store policies to prevent cross-contamination and foodborne illness.
- Adhere to health and safety guidelines for handling hazardous equipment and using personal protective equipment as needed.

Requirements
- Minimum 4 years work experience in retail
- Minimum matric/diploma
- A recent SAPS clearance
- A valid medical certificate
