Position overview
As a Deli Assistant, you’ll interact directly with customers while preparing, serving, and packaging freshly made meals and sides. You’ll help maintain well-stocked and visually appealing displays, manage food safety protocols, and contribute to a positive shopping experience. It’s a dynamic, fast-paced role for someone who enjoys both food preparation and frontline service.

What you will do
Duties & responsibilities
Customer Service
- Welcome customers warmly and assist them in choosing from prepared food offerings, including meals, sides, salads, soups, and specialty items.
- Provide information about prepared foods, including ingredients, allergens, preparation methods, and reheating/storage instructions.
- Upsell and promote daily specials, popular items, and seasonal prepared food offerings to maximise sales and customer satisfaction.
- Handle customer orders, accurately portion and package food items, and accommodate special requests.
Product Presentation & Stock Management
- Assist in receiving, inspecting, and storing ingredients and prepared food items to ensure freshness and quality.
- Maintain visually appealing, organised, and well-stocked displays for prepared foods, including hot, cold, and ready-to-cook products.
- Monitor and manage inventory levels by tracking product usage, reporting low stock, and assisting with reordering.
- Rotate prepared foods to maintain freshness and ensure the removal of past sell-by date and damaged products.
- Ensure accurate and clear labelling of all products, including pricing, ingredients, allergens, and promotional details.
Preparation and Cooking
- Prepare and cook a variety of ready-to-eat foods, including entrees, sides, soups, salads, and specialty items, following standardised recipes.
- Use kitchen equipment such as ovens, grills, slicers, steamers, and food processors safely and effectively.
- Follow portion sizes, recipes, and cooking procedures to ensure consistent product quality and presentation.
- Monitor and maintain proper holding and storage temperatures for all prepared food items.
Cleanliness and Safety
- Maintain a clean and sanitary work environment, including preparation surfaces, equipment, utensils, and customer-facing areas.
- Adhere to food safety and hygiene protocols to prevent cross-contamination and comply with store and health regulations.
- Properly handle food waste, ensure safe use of kitchen equipment, and utilise personal protective equipment when necessary.

Requirements
- Minimum 4 years work experience in retail
- Minimum matric/diploma
- A recent SAPS clearance
- A valid medical certificate
