Our Deli Cooks prepare a wide variety of fresh, ready-to-eat meals, salads, and sides that cater to customer preferences and seasonal offerings. You’ll collaborate on menu planning, supervise kitchen helpers, and ensure every dish meets our high standards for taste, quality, and presentation. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys culinary creativity in a retail food environment.

What you will do

Duties & responsibilities

Food Preparation and Cooking
  • Prepare a wide variety of hot and cold meals, including salads, sandwiches, entrées and sides.
  • Maintain the highest standards of product quality, presentation and taste.
Menu Planning and Product Development
  • Create and update menus in collaboration with the Head Cook based on customer preferences, seasonal ingredients and sales trends.
  • Innovate and introduce new ready-to-eat meals and food offerings to attract customers.
  • Collaborate with marketing and retail teams to highlight new items and promotions.
Team Supervision
  • Supervise, train, and manage kitchen helpers, ensuring they follow proper cooking techniques and safety procedures.
  • Foster a positive and professional work environment within the kitchen team.
Inventory and Ingredient Management
  • Manage stock levels for ingredients, ensuring timely replenishment through the Head Cook.
  • Monitor the quality of incoming products and ensure proper storage to maintain freshness.
  • Reduce waste by optimising ingredient usage and monitoring food preparation closely.
Hygiene and Safety Compliance
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen in line with health and food safety regulations.
  • Adopt a clean-as-you-go work ethic throughout all aspects of production.
  • Ensure proper handling of food, including labelling, storage, and temperature control.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the kitchen to ensure compliance with hygiene standards.
Customer Service and Retail Collaboration
  • Work closely with the retail and deli teams in collaboration with the Head Cook to ensure hot food sections are always well-stocked and visually appealing.
  • Respond to customer requests and feedback, providing excellent customer service.
  • Assist in organising food tastings, promotions and events to boost sales.
Other

Any other task from time to time.

Requirements

  • Minimum 4 years work experience in retail
  • Minimum matric/diploma
  • A recent SAPS clearance
  • A valid medical certificate
