Position overview

As a Fish Assistant, you’ll help prepare and present a variety of fresh and frozen seafood, supporting the department with tasks such as filleting, weighing, packaging, and customer service. You’ll also assist with stock rotation and maintaining cleanliness in the seafood section. This is an ideal role for someone looking to develop hands-on experience in seafood retail in a supportive team environment.

Duties & responsibilities

Customer Service
  • Greet customers warmly and offer assistance with seafood selections, including fresh fish, shellfish, and specialty seafood items.
  • Provide detailed information about fish and seafood products, such as preparation methods, storage tips, nutritional information, and cooking techniques.
  • Upsell and promote daily specials, premium seafood selections and promotional items to increase sales.
  • Handle customer orders, including custom filleting, cutting, weighing and packaging, with precision and attention to detail.
Product Presentation & Stock Management
  • Assist in receiving, inspecting and properly storing fish and seafood deliveries to maintain freshness and quality.
  • Ensure that seafood displays are visually appealing, well-stocked and organised, including ice beds for fresh fish.
  • Track and manage stock levels, monitor inventory usage and report any low stock to the department manager.
  • Rotate products regularly to maintain freshness and promptly remove any past sell-by date or damaged items.
  • Ensure accurate labelling of seafood products, including pricing, origin and any relevant safety or allergen information.
Preparation and Production
  • Clean, fillet, cut, and prepare a variety of fish and seafood products according to store and customer specifications.
  • Operate specialised seafood preparation equipment, such as knives, fillet machines and scales, safely and effectively.
  • Follow established recipes and portion sizes when preparing pre-packaged or marinated fish products.
  • Monitor and maintain proper holding temperatures for all seafood products, especially hot or cold-prepared items.
Cleanliness and Safety
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary work environment, including cutting boards, knives, countertops, storage areas and preparation surfaces.
  • Adhere to all food safety and hygiene protocols to prevent cross-contamination and ensure compliance with store and regulatory policies.
  • Ensure proper disposal of seafood waste and maintain high cleanliness standards for customer-facing areas.
  • Follow health and safety guidelines when handling sharp tools, cleaning supplies, and hazardous equipment, utilising personal protective equipment as required.

Requirements

  • Minimum 4 years work experience in retail
  • Minimum matric/diploma
  • A recent SAPS clearance
  • A valid medical certificate
