Position overview
Join MyFamily Grocery as a Fishmonger and oversee the seafood section, including stock control, supplier coordination, product presentation, and staff supervision. You’ll ensure all seafood products are fresh, attractively displayed, and handled according to strict hygiene standards. This leadership role is ideal for someone with in-depth knowledge of seafood and strong attention to quality and customer service.

What you will do
Duties & responsibilities
Stock Management
- Manage stock levels of fish and seafood products, including fresh, frozen, and packaged items.
- Forecast demand for various types of fish and seafood, placing orders to maintain an optimal balance between fast-selling and slow-moving products.
- Monitor product sell-by dates, rotate stock to ensure freshness (FIFO method), and initiate markdowns for products nearing expiry.
- Ensure that temperature-sensitive products are stored appropriately in line with health and safety regulations to maintain quality and safety.
Supplier Coordination
- Work with suppliers to ensure timely and accurate deliveries of fresh and frozen products.
- Address and resolve any discrepancies in deliveries, product quality issues, or discrepancies with suppliers promptly.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with suppliers to ensure high-quality produce and timely deliveries.
Product Merchandising
- Ensure that fish and seafood products are displayed attractively, organised by type, and presented in a manner that highlights freshness and quality.
- Collaborate with the marketing and merchandising teams to set up promotional displays, seasonal themes, and in-store advertisements for seafood products.
- Maintain accurate price labels, product descriptions, and promotional signage to ensure visibility and correct pricing.
Team Supervision
- Supervise and train staff in the fish department, ensuring that they are knowledgeable about seafood products, proper handling, food safety protocols, and store policies.
- Assign tasks such as restocking shelves, preparing products, setting up displays, and assisting customers.
- Schedule staff shifts to ensure appropriate staffing levels, especially during peak shopping times or busy periods.
Customer Service
- Ensure a high level of customer satisfaction by training staff to assist customers in selecting seafood, answering questions, and providing helpful product information.
- Handle special customer orders for custom cuts, large orders, or specific seafood requests.
- Address and resolve any customer complaints or issues related to fish and seafood products in a professional and timely manner.
Sales and Reporting
- Monitor sales performance of fish and seafood products, identifying best-sellers, seasonal trends, and slow movers.
- Regularly review sales, stock levels, and promotional performance reports to provide recommendations for improvements in sales and stock management.
- Analyse customer buying trends to adjust stock orders, propose new product lines, or recommend promotional strategies.
Wastage and Shrinkage Control
- Implement strategies to minimise product loss due to spoilage, damage, or theft within the fish department.
- Ensure proper handling, storage, and stock rotation procedures are followed by staff to minimise waste and product deterioration.
- Conduct periodic audits to track stock levels and prevent inventory discrepancies.

Requirements
- Minimum 4 years work experience in retail
- Minimum matric/diploma
- A recent SAPS clearance
- A valid medical certificate
